some background about my festival perspective before i review t in the park.
i come form Scotland and have what i like to think a fairly eclectic range of musical taste. form ac/dc to stevie wonder.
now the first ever festival i ever went to was t in the park in 2000 when i was but a lad of 17. i had a really good time and saw many a fine band then the next year i found the wondrous reading and have never looked back since this year will be my fourth reading in a row i cant wait to be back among the faithful once again especially after the T in the park experience this year.
ok now I headed in to the festival in good sprit, the weather wasn’t great but hey its Scotland and I’m used to it. There were almighty queue going in to get the festival site for both cars and when collecting the wrist band which they make you queue for first before setting up your tent cause thousands of people to be herded like cattle through metal fences.
Tent set up drink cracked open. Found fellow reading people who also reside in Scotland and got down to getting very, very drunk. Now one of the peeps i was camping with didn’t bring that much alcohol with them so we went to the buy a 24 pack of beer the usual really we expected it to be slightly expensive in line with the £25 squid you pay at reading. but we discover that for a 24 of tennents (not a very good beer anyway) it was £60 i nearly hit the dude when he told me on principle alone. Now I know we Scottish have a reputation for being tight fisted with our cash which we keep in our sporrans but would anyone with an ounce of sense pay that much for a second rate beer.
ok the first day Saturday.
when heading into the arena with what seemed to be the whole of the campsite at the same time. it was one of the most badly organised things I have ever witnessed the feeling of cattle being headed was begging to feel like a characteristic. thousand of people hardly moving atoll i was waiting for nearly almost an hour to get in and missed kasbien so no review of them.
Once we got in most of the party need to use the toilet so after standing for an hour waiting to get in most of the ladies had to stand for at least half an hour to get to use the toilet.
so after all that we need a bloody good drink. So you'd think we could head to the bar hand over some cash and get some alcohol. not at this bloody festival we had to wait 2 hours in a massive queue to purchase tokens at £2.70 a pop. Then stand in another queue to actually get a drink which was another large bastard.
moods were frayed. Tension reined.
first band of the afternoon. Nearly 3 fucking hours after getting out.
dogs die in hot cars. they are a newish Scottish band and were really good the crowd was quite receptive and the played a decent set. Next up we saw the ordinary boys I was impressed straight away when there intro music turned out to be madness. the boys themselves were pumping good catchy tunes in a mod-stylee. and even a cover of summertime blues.
caught a smidgen of pink next she was passable but it didn’t do it for me.
then onto king tuts wah wah tent where there was a mighty set by ash who came onto stage with Tim holding a guitar spewing forth flames. the set was explosive all the hits with the crowd going absolutely mental. the band were on top for and charlotte was looking spectacular, which is always a bonus.
Next up i saw degrassi a unsigned Scottish band who now count ex-idlewild bassist bob fairfoul as there energetic bass player. They were absolutely amazing energetic rock with powerful vocal fugazi style distortion and the thumping bass lines form bob. I EMPLORE PEOPLE GO TO SEE THIS BAND IF YOU CAN THEY DESERVE TO BE SIGNED AND PLAYING READING.

so then the libertines on the nme stage. the crowd swelled before they came to stage loads of peeps there to see them possibly fail to pull it off . but the boys were good. Employing the dude who played with them at reading last year to fill in on guitar. the set was strong and was really good the crowd seem to dig it and i almost didn’t notice Pete wasn’t there. though i am not a big libertines fan but i enjoyed it.
ok now the headliners i chose to see to close the sat was the darkness. now i am a big darkness fan I’ve seen them lots of times before but this set just felt knida lacklustre. the pulled out all the usual moves with some pyro bangs for good measure. now i hope they tighten their game or there headling slot at reading is going to be a big disappointment for a lot of people.
end of first day a few good bands far to many queues
ok now Sunday looked allot more promising more of a decent stretch of bands And after a blinder of a night in the campsite my mood was lot brighter. the queues weren’t as big to.
there first band i managed to se was razolight i not heard much apart form the singles but i was quite impressed with them getting a good reception form the crowd.
straight after razorlight was stellarstar* now this was quite a tuff spot to play they were up against Franz Ferdinand on the main stage, but once they hit the stage the crowd filled up and they were one of my highlights. A set to rawk and dance to in good measure
then came the killers they had some tequnical problems but it was a really good set. Not as funky as stellarstar* but was good all the same.
i watched the rapture form the beer tent and what i saw they were good but the alcohol was more important at that point.
another highlight for me was pj Harvey. she blew me away and was looking fine as hell with purple Pixes boots and a funky yellow dress. the new material form uh huh her fitted in well with her classic tracks and it was a powerful set that was well received form the crowd
after pj i caught a smidgen of kings of Leon they were ok not my cup of tea. But i went there mainly to get a good spot for the return of the pixies.
the pixies stormed to the stage and although it looked like black Francis didn’t really want to be there they deliver a mighty set. i mean what other band can fit 23 songs into an hour and ten minutes. all the classics were there and Joey Santiago done a mighty guitar solo piece that seemed to last for ages but i loved every second of it as did the crowd who were so condensed with peeps baying to catch a glimpse of the mighty pixies that it was hard to move atoll. long live the pixies
to finish of the weekend i had to choose between the strokes, snow patrol, massive attack and the chemical brothers. i choose the chemical who were playing in the massive dance tent though unfortunaly it wasn’t massive enough it was covered in signs saying full with little or no one getting in when i finally did get in it was like a sauna but the tunes were pumping i stayed for a large majority of the set which was on top form.
and so all in all the band were good the festival seems to have been organised by a monkey with a greed factor beyond that of anyone. And no campfires. Scotland is cold fires help keep warm they organiser were just trying to squeeze as many tents as they can into the camping area.
I would go back. But i feel they never gona have a festival to compete with reading or glasto its just like the euro Disney of festivals. if the organiser would just go to reading or glasto and take some notes they could have a festival that could develop into something amazing.
