The decision to go to Distortion 2002 was made simply because of the fact that Extreme, the year before had been so good. Plus the fact that Greenday are headlining has a lot to do with this.
Due to poor planning, I have to drag my friend Adam out of bed at 8 in the morning and get him going, which is easier said than done, while my friends Rob, Kev and Vic are travelling down with other people. Oh, and I have all the tickets.
Adam decides that the best route to Nottingham, is the longest and while Rob, Kev and Vic make it in plenty of time, Adam and I stop in Horncastle because he hasn't had breakfast. The day is going a bit pearshaped.
Eventually we get going, only to be met with constant traffic jams due to road works. Add to this the fact that I have phone calls every 10 minutes from very frustrated mates, this is not a pleasent trip.
Eventually, we get there and we get into Wollaton Park to catch the end of Spunge's set, which sounds damn fine.
The next band are Face To Face who play some fine pop punk, well at least thats what it sounds like as I queue for the bar. For some reason, poor organisation on behalf of the organisers has caused a huge queue of people to build up, waiting for beer tokens. The queue suddenly disappears and I'm front of the queue, so I bulk buy, just incase the queues come back again.
The Levellers come on, play "England My Home" and a load of songs I don't recognise, you would have though they would have played "Hope Street", and they go away again.
I decide to go on the Fair Rides, rather than listen to Hundred Reasons dreary emo shite, though I'm told by Rob that they sound like Blink 182. Then I have to race to see Raging Speedhorn, who are amazing, the one heavy metal band on the entire bill and they get the crowd going, unlike Pitchshfter(although excellent) did the year before.
Then it was A. Who were ok, didn't really listen to them, but I sang along to "Nothing" and that was them done. Rival Schools were the one band of the day that everyone agreed was shit, more dreary emo bollocks that no one cared about. Can't remember much about Idlewild, apart from the fact they fucked up one their songs.
The next band took me by surprise, I don't know any of their songs and they were fantastic. I am of course talking about The Wildhearts. Brilliant from start to finish, poppy punky rocky material that should have seen them on the main stage below Greenday. Instead of Iggy Pop.
I don't know much of Iggy Pops material, but the howling he did inbetween songs really annoyed everyone I was with. So we resorted to doing what we had been doing most of the day, getting drunk.
Legend maybe, but the only good song he played was "The Passenger".
Then it was Greenday...I've been a fan of this band since I was 14, I had been waiting for years to see them live. They kept us waiting for ages, but it was more than worth it. I had started way back but I ended up right at the front, I ended up with bruises across my chest and legs due to being squashed against the barriers and I loved every minute of it. Greenday were amazing, everything I had hoped, songs like "Basket Case", Hitching A Ride", "Welcome To Paradise" all sound amazing. The only disapointment is the fact that they don't play "Time Of Your Life" as an encore.
Then it was hometime, as we walked out of Wollaton Park, every car we pasted was playing some Greenday song. All I could do is smile, one of the best gigs of my life.
Greenday are headlining Reading Festival on the Sunday this year, I can't wait.
