Don't they suck? I just tried to rip the Velvet Revolver CD to mp3 so I can put it on the iPod that I've got on order, and it's flippin protected! Now, having coughed up the cash to buy some music, I'd like to be treated as a responsible human being, and be given the right to listen to that music where and how I like. What am I supposed to do? Download it from the iTunes Music Store, which would mean I'd paid over £20 for the album? Fuck that! I'm never buying a copy-protected CD again.

That does indeed suck! What cd ripper you trying to use? I had to write an essay in a Uni exam earlier this year about the tactics recently taken up by record companies.. recon I probably scared the marker into givin me a good result with the anger in my answer. oh yes.

iTunes only showed five songs. I might try ripping it to AIFFs with Roxio Audio Extractor instead...

CDex is a good one. The copy protection code is usually within the first few seconds of the first track, to stop rippers at the start, so sometimes its only the first track you cant rip properly.

I'll try Music Match, although I think that and iTunes are pretty much identical core programming...

Hmmm, Music Match have stopped making the Mac version. Even Audio Hijack can't rip the audio from it. I have written to BMG (the record label) telling them what i think of their poxy copy-protection. Will now download the tracks from Limewire! Illegally! Don't buy copy-protected CDs - they're designed to rip-off consumers.

Ah you use Mac well that maybe why as I have several copy protected cds (Velvet Revolver, Darkness etc ) but have never had a problem copying them mate so ur problem therefore lies maybe with mac !
If u are very nice i can send u the album as MP3 files ??!

I also had probs copying my Streets album, even music match just seemed to give me silence. Said it had copied, even had right sized files, but silence.....
It copied them in analogue mode though, whatever that means, so I ripped 'em with Windows Media Player, and am using itunes to convert them to mp3.
Copy Protection Sucks

Will now download the tracks from Limewire! Illegally! Don't buy copy-protected CDs - they're designed to rip-off consumers. 1) That's not actually illegal. You own a license to the music and are getting a lower-quality version. 2) A copy-protected CD is not technically a CD. That's why the dont have the CD logo on them. At least it has improved somewhat from the situation a few years ago, had a mate with a mac who bought the original pressing of the Star Wars Episode II soundtrack and it killed his Mac. Had to take it in for service. Copy protection is utterly stupid. It only hurts the legitamate user such as yourself. The people it is designed to stop can get round it in a matter of seconds. Talking about 'stealing' music is bloody retarded. If you were to photocopy the mona lisa and take the copy home you havent stolen it have you. 'tards,
