Just thought I might as well write a quick half-assed review...
I arrived at the Manchester Old Trafford cricket ground at about half past six and the rain was already pouring down in front of Goldfrapp who didn't look like they could be bothered to put on a decent show. They seemed really tired. To be honest I probably wouldn't have noticed if they had been on form.
Anyway one emergency poncho later I was edging my way to the front while the roadies set up the Pixies' gear. Weirdly the stage was set up slap bang in the middle of the cricket pitch which meant about half of the entire venue was backstage, making it a lot smaller than I would have thought. The rain miraculously stopped as the local radio DJ muppet introduced the Pixies as 'the forerunners for Nirvana, from California' which was a bit err... wrong. He then plugged his breakfast show to a chorus of boos.
They came on stage grinning and waving, Kim Deal looking a bit drunk and playing random notes on her bass guitar. Bone Machine was first and everyone was jumping up and down with huge smiles on their faces and singing alonging really loudly. It was really funny hearing everyone's botched attempts at imitating Frank Black's squeaks and screams. Everyone seemed to know every word to every song that followed, including faster tunes like Broken Face and Isla De Encanta.
Aside from a few quick thankyous there wasn't a gap between any of the songs - they crammed at least 20 songs into the hour slot, most from the first three albums. During Vamos the guitarist Joey Santiago did a crazy solo involving putting his guitar onto a stand and messing around with his pedals to create a wall of noise before hitting it with a drumstick thrown over by the drummer. And the crowd went wild!
As the opening notes to 'In Heaven' rang out the heavens opened again and they did 'Where is My Mind' in the pouring rain for a magical finish. They may well only be in it for the money these days, but they made me very happy for that hour.
When the amps etc were being taken off everyone started chanting 'fuck the Stereophonics!' (they were on next) before leaving. I reckon about half the crowd left after the Pixies had finished.
